Just as day is unimaginable without night and summer – without winter, so amber lager is unimaginable without its dark brother. After Valmiermuiža’s amber lager was presented to the world, the brewery’s Master Brewer set out to study which dark beers are closest to the hearts of Latvian beer lovers. Several months of work followed, choosing the best ingredients, brewing test batches and presenting them for appraisal by connoisseurs.
Valmiermuiža Dark Lager is brewed with dark caramel, Munich and Pilsner malts, which give the beer its sweet richness, while Hallertauer Mittelfrüh and Nugget, which also comes from Hallertauer, hops generate the aroma bouquet and bitter notes of flavour. Valmiermuiža Dark Lager pours into a glass with a thick golden head. This ruby red beer gives rise to the thick sweetness of malt with a slight note of dried plums, while the first sip of caramel is offset by the mild bitterness of hops, as well as fine notes of dried fruit and a hint of good rum. The aftertaste is long and noble.
Unhurriedly brewed for special occasions, in Latvia beer has been the Master Brewer’s pride and joy since days of yore. As a measure of our respect for venerable traditions, at Valmiermuiža we brew unpasteurised beer patiently and nurture a culture of enjoying beer, so that beer enjoys a place of honour on the festive table just as it did in olden days.
