During the mid-19th century, Riga expanded beyond its defensive fortifications and grew at dizzying speed. At the turn of the century, it experienced both a commercial and construction boom. Among the flagships of the Industrial Revolution were breweries, which brewed beer varieties renowned at home and abroad. Among the most noteworthy was Baltic Porter, which was so popular that Riga’s elegant Art Nouveau buildings were interspersed with special porter bars, where this fine beverage was served as a dessert, like coffee sometimes sweetened with sugar.

Valmiermuiža Brewery’s dedication to Riga contains five types of malts and three varieties of hops. This almost black porter, which gives rise to a thick light brown head in the glass, conjures up a sweet chocolaty aroma, laced with dried fruit and coffee notes. Its flavour appeals with a hint of rich chocolate cake, which gives way to the fruitiness of dried figs and the balanced bitterness of roasted malt.
